2016 Presidential Race Welcomes Rick Perry

Former Texas governor, Rick Perry announced his candidacy for president on June 4. He is the tenth Republican to join the race. In his announcement speech, Perry credited farming, family and serving his country with helping him develop good values. “I know America has experienced great change, but what it means to be an American has never changed,” he said.

Perry said weak leadership at home has led to chaos abroad. He pledged to promote economic strength as he did in Texas, and show military muscle overseas.

Perry grew up the son of tenant farmers in the tiny West Texas town of Paint Creek. He was one of the first in his family to go to college, earning a degree in Animal Science from Texas A&M University. Between 1972 and 1977, Perry served in the U.S. Air Force flying C-130 tactical airlift aircraft in Europe and the Middle East. He was elected Lieutenant Governor in 1998, and served three terms as governor of Texas.

On the issues, Perry wants to grow the economy, lower taxes and eliminate the federal debt. He wants to rebuild the military and secure the border. Since 2000, Texas has created 1.5 million jobs–almost one-third of all new private sector jobs in the United States. Last summer, Gov. Perry deployed the Texas National Guard to the Mexican border after federal funding ran out.
