Paul Ryan Elected Speaker

Paul RyanPaul Ryan (R-WI) was elected Speaker of the House on Thursday. In his acceptance speech, he implored Congress members to pray for him, and to pray for deeper understanding of each other. He outlined his hopes for leadership, stating he would like to fix the tax code, put patients in charge of their healthcare, grow the economy, strengthen the military, lift people out of poverty and pay down the debt.

Ryan is considered a “policy wonk” when it comes to taxation and budgeting. He resigned as chairman of the Ways and Means Committee to accept this position. In the 2012 presidential election, Ryan was Mitt Romney’s running mate. At 45 years old, he will be the youngest  speaker in 146 years.

Why this Matters: Ryan admitted in his speech that the House is “broken.” There is a divide that separates true conservatives from the moderate Republicans and Democrats. During John Boehner’s time, the moderates and liberals got what they wanted–usually citing the fact that we have a Democrat president as the reason. Conservatives don’t agree. Ryan has shown himself to be middle of the road, and it remains to be seen which side Ryan will favor as Speaker.

How to Pray: Father, thank you for men and women who are willing to serve in Washington. Bless the efforts of those who are humble and look to You for wisdom and understanding. We ask for the members to have greater love for each other and wisdom as they serve.

1 Kings 3:9 – Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?
