Britons Vote to Exit EU

David_Cameron

After more than 40 years of being shackled to the European Union, British citizens voted 52 to 48 on June 23 to part ways. This came as a surprise, as most pundits and polls predicted the opposite. The U.S. stock market and foreign markets took a beating with the news, but most analysts expect things to level off.

In a speech following the results, British Prime Minister David Cameron, who was a champion of the “remain campaign,” said the outcome signaled a failure of his administration. He also spoke about his achievements, including the introduction of gay marriage and progress with the country’s economy, but announced he would step down in October.

The EU is made up of representatives who are appointed, not elected. There are 90+ buildings in Brussels, Belgium housing its various departments. It was thought that membership in the EU would bring economic benefits, but opponents point out it has meant a lack of competition, excessive regulations, and no accountability for the bureaucrats making laws from Belgium that Britons must follow.

Why this Matters: Those in favor of Brexit (the British “exit”) have been vilified as “intolerant xenophobes,” by globalists in Europe and the U.S. And although massive immigration may be part of the reason they wanted out, the economic facts are startling. Consider this: the ratio of debt to GDP in the Eurozone (19 countries) is 90.7 percent! It may be that other nations will also exit–such as France, which takes in 200,000 immigrants annually, and has seen their national debt grow from 68 percent in 2008 to 96 percent today.

Pray for the British people, for God to guide the transition, and for a resurgence of the gospel in that nation.

Job 35:9 – People cry out under a load of oppression; they plead for relief from the arm of the powerful. (NIV)

Split Decision is Setback for President

The Supreme Court handed down a split decision on June 23, which blocked President Obama from giving a reprieve to millions of illegal immigrants. A group of 26 states challenged the President’s executive order that prevented illegals from being deported and made them eligible for work permits. A lower court ruled in favor of the states, but it was sent up to the Supreme Court, which has a current balance of 4-4 liberal vs. conservative justices. They split their votes, which leaves the lower court’s ruling in place.

The case dealt with two separate Obama programs: one allowing illegals whose children are U.S. citizens or legal permanent residents to remain; the other expanding an existing program to protect a larger population of illegals who came to the U.S. as children.

Why this Matters: In July 2015, the President allowed legal immigrants seeking citizenship to opt out of the Oath of Allegiance that pledges one will “bear arms on behalf of the United States.” Today, 18.7 million immigrants are eligible to become citizens, and 8.8 million already meet the 5-year residency requirement. If allowed to remain, all would be given full access to government benefits.

How to Pray: Father, wake us up! You’ve given us the blessing of a government founded on godly principles and we have squandered it. We’ve elected corrupt people and we have lost our way. Set us back on the right course, impress on all the need to repent and turn back to You. Revive us, we pray.

Is. 57:15 – For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones.

West Virginia Ravaged by Floods

Heavy rains that began on June 23 flooded West Virginia and are responsible for at least 26 deaths. Authorities haven’t been able to assess the damage yet, but it will probably be among the state’s worst natural disasters. At least 200 homes have been swept away and 18,000 are without electricity. Crews are still searching for missing residents.

Pray for West Virginia and those who have lost loved ones, their homes, and businesses. May God restore everything the enemy has stolen from them!
