Hillary Clinton Accepts Nomination

Clinton_DNCHillary Clinton formally accepted the presidential nomination from a fractured Democrat Party and made history as the country’s first female candidate for President. Clinton has her work cut out for her, and must win over disaffected Bernie Sanders supporters–who feel like the system is rigged–and bridge the gap between being a champion of “change,” or an extender of the Obama presidency. This was a rough week for Democrats as the following events interrupted the flow of the convention:

  • Bernie Sanders pleading with his base to support Hillary
  • Debbie Wasserman Schultz’s resignation following Wikileaks’ release of DNC emails showing extreme favoritism for Clinton over Sanders
  • Loud boos from the audience at the appearance of former DNC chairman Wasserman Schultz
  • Clinton hiring Wasserman Schultz for her campaign
  • The Democrat Party blaming the hacking of the DNC on the Russians
  • Trump sarcastically calling on Russia to find and release government emails deleted by Clinton
  • The news media portraying Trump’s joke as evidence he is colluding with the Russians
  • Bernie Sanders leaving the Democrat Party and returning to his seat in the Senate as an independent

Why this Matters: Donald Trump now has a seven-point lead in the national polls. The two were nearly tied before the Republican National Convention, then Trump pulled ahead. This week, the trend has continued. Trump leads 47.4 percent to Clinton’s 40.1 percent. Next week’s polls will show if Clinton received a bump from her convention this week.

Last Three Cops Freed in Freddie Gray’s Death

Baltimore State’s Attorney Marilyn Mosby dropped the charges against the three remaining police officers who were indicted in the death of Freddie Gray. The first three were all found “not guilty” by a grand jury. Five of the six officers have filed charges against Mosby and Maj. Sanuel Cogen of the Baltimore Sheriff’s Office–who was the one filing the charges. The lawsuits allege false arrest, false imprisonment, and defamation, among other charges.

Freddie Gray, who was black, died after being transported in a police van, where he broke his neck. Three of the officers involved were white, the others were Hispanic or black.

Why this Matters: Mosby gave a press conference to announce the ruling of homicide and criminal charges against the officers. She told citizens that she had heard their cry for ‘no justice, no peace.’ Many people cheered her decision, forgetting that the law should not be in reaction to public sentiment, but stand solely upon the evidence.

Thank You God for what seems to be a fair outcome. Help these officers put their lives back together and help the family of Freddie Gray overcome their grief. Father, we are also aware that there is prejudice in some of the general public and in some law enforcers. Help us all to see people as Jesus sees them. Forgive us for the times we have judged. Influence law enforcement departments in this nation with answers that will keep the public safe, keep them safe, and enable them to find and arrest criminals. In Jesus’ name.

Priest Killed by ISIS Attackers in France

Father Jacques Hamel, 85, had his throat slit by two teenaged ISIS fanatics after they stormed a church in a small town in Normandy, France. The priest was celebrating Mass when the attackers seized him and took five others hostage. The police shot and killed the attackers. One had been on foreign intelligence watch lists, and French authorities recently received a tip saying the man was ready to carry out an attack.

Why this Matters: It did not seem to matter that this parish had donated land to the local Muslim community in 2000 for the building of a mosque. Perhaps the people of Normandy do not know that obedient Muslims are commanded by the Q’uran to utterly destroy infidels.

Father, comfort the people of this small town and help those who endured this trial to overcome the trauma. Thank you for watch lists and other sources of information that keep these attacks to a minimum. Guide us in the U. S. as our leaders define security risks and develop the nets to catch the bad guys, in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Prov. 24:6 – For by wise counsel thou shalt make thy war; and in multitude counsellors there is safety .
