Trump Addresses the Nation with Unifying, Uplifting Vision for America

President Donald J. Trump entered the Capitol building on Tuesday night to five minutes of thundering applause from lawmakers and others gathered to hear his address to Congress. His speech was considered a home run in even the most antagonist corners. Media pundits agreed it was his finest speech yet, and some suggested it was one of the best speeches by any president in that setting.

The President used the theme of the nation’s upcoming 250th anniversary to inspire Americans that there is no problem that cannot be fixed. It is estimated that 40 to 45 million viewers watched the President in what was not a state of the union address, but an opportunity for him to talk about what he has done since taking office, just a little more than 30 days ago. A CBS poll showed 76 percent of those who watched the speech approved. Forty percent of Democrats at least somewhat approved and 18 percent strongly approved.

There was a lot for Democrats to support. Trump began with a recognition of Black History Month and his call for an end to anti-Semitism and hatred. He proposed additional spending for infrastructure, a joint venture with Prime Minister Trudeau of Canada to provide funding for loans to women in business, providing care for recovering drug addicts, and paid maternity leave for mothers.

Other topics were campaign promises, including strengthening national security, fighting radical Islamic terror, increased spending for the military and for infrastructure projects, and supporting law enforcement officers.

An emotional moment of the speech for everyone was the President’s recognition of Carryn Owens, the wife of Navy SEAL William Ryan Owens who was killed during a raid on an al Qaeda outpost. The applause certainly was one of the longest ever during a speech of this kind. The President quoted scripture, saying there was no greater example of love than a man who laid down his life for his friends, his country, and freedom.

Owens’ father made headlines last week saying he wouldn’t speak to the President because the mission was “stupid.” The President seemed to address this when he said valuable information was gathered and it was an important mission. Watch this video of that segment.

The time to repeal Obamacare is running out. The President mentioned his desire that the plan be repealed and replaced. That brought groans from the Democrats, and represents one of the biggest points of contention between the two parties. The other, President Trump’s VOICE initiative which provides help to victims of crimes by illegal immigrants, brought another round of groans. Present in the audience were family members of people who have been killed by illegals who were supposed to have been deported, but weren’t.

President Trump encouraged unity in Congress and that both houses would take action on his agenda. He wants them to increase funding for veterans, pass historic tax reform, and support his other agenda items.

Why this Matters: This was certainly a unifying speech. However, the Democrats looked very angry and some, such as Al Franken, refused to applaud even when the President talked favorably about their core issues. It was interesting to see so many wearing purple, the color Hillary and Bill Clinton chose to wear for her concession speech. Other Democrat women wore white as “suffragettes” and gave thumbs down to the speech.

Conservatives who don’t like to see the government overspend may be concerned about the billions and billions the President’s agenda will cost. Even though Trump has promised cuts in other areas to compensate, and says economic growth will also provide more funding, many are skeptical. The biggest, most costly agenda item is health care. And although we want to be generous, the truth is that nowhere in the Constitution is health care a right.

How to Pray: Father, this is Your country and we are Your people. Where the President has heard from You and is trying to lead as You have directed, we ask for success. Where he is off the mark, put a stop to the plans. We pray You would expose any staff members anywhere in the government who seek his harm. Remove them. We pray especially that Obamacare would be repealed. Give our lawmakers a plan from Your heart to replace it, in Jesus’ name, amen.

Prov. 19:21 – There are many plans in a man’s heart, Nevertheless the LORD’s counsel–that will stand.
