Trump’s New Budget: Bye Bye Big Bird

A goal of Conservatives has long been the cutting of federal fat. Enter Donald Trump with his big pair of scissors, and say goodbye to taxpayer funding of PBS and the National Endowment for the Arts and Humanities.

That doesn’t mean Big Bird and the Smithsonian are going away, it just means that American citizens won’t be forced to subsidize them. Trump’s new budget would defund these agencies the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (PBS and NPR), National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for Humanities, the Institute of Museum, and Library Services. Additional cuts will affect the Smithsonian and National Gallery of Art.

Other agencies losing funding:

  • Health and Human Services, down 17.9 percent
  • State Department, down 28.7 percent
  • Agriculture, down 20.7 percent
  • Labor, down 20.7 percent
  • Transportation down 12.7 percent
  • Energy, down 5.6 percent
  • Commerce, down 15.7 percent
  • Interior, down 11.7 percent
  • Justice, down 3.8 percent
  • Treasure, down 4.1 percent
  • EPA, down 31 percent

The three winners in the budget are Defense (up 10 percent), Veterans Affairs (up 5.9 percent) and Homeland Security (up 6.8 percent), which will get $59.5 billion.

Why this Matters: PBS and NPR can easily gain funding from private sources, and Sesame Street is already in a deal with HBO–so why should taxpayers be forced to pay for them? Older citizens remember despicable “art” such as a crucifix inside a jar of urine being paid for by grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. So much for fiscal responsibility!

The Trump budget eliminates the fluff that has angered Conservatives for decades. The folks in DC will howl if this budget actually gets approved by Congress. And if it does, we can expect to see the next batch of protesters wearing red shoes and big yellow feathers, decrying the hatred of President Trump.

How to Pray: for God to continue guiding our leaders to pare down government. May He strengthen them especially when the pressure comes.

Dutch MP Geert Wilders, who lost in Wednesday’s election

Dutch Citizens Vote Status Quo

After months of debate as to whether nationalism and conservatism would retake political control in Holland, on Wednesday, Dutch voters chose the status quo. Liberal Prime Minister Mark Rutte was re-elected and the European establishment breathed a sigh of relief.

Rutte’s opponent, Geert Wilders campaigned on an anti-Islamist theme and was nicknamed the “Dutch Donald Trump.” He had an outside chance of winning and was very popular with younger voters. His party went form having just four seats to 14. Gilders’ political party is the largest opposition party, and he will remain influential in the Dutch parliament.

Why this Matters: Massive immigration has overrun parts of Europe, especially the Netherlands. The clash of cultures has caused serious problems. Although the “far right” wasn’t able to shift the election this round, they made a significant impact on the discussion of nationalism vs. immigration.

How to Pray: that government leaders in Europe and beyond would listen to the cries of their people and heed them, and that they would begin doing what is best, not what is politically expedient.

James 5:4 – Behold, the hire of the labourers who have reaped down your fields,
which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth: and the cries of them which have reaped are entered into the ears of the Lord of sabaoth.

FBI Nabs Russians who Hacked Yahoo

Two Russian spies and two other persons were charged with hacking 500 million Yahoo accounts. The 47-count indictment by the Justice Department includes charges of conspiracy, computer fraud and abuse, economic espionage, theft of trade secrets, wire fraud, access device fraud and aggravated identity theft.

U.S. authorities say that Putin knew about the hack because it involved FSB–formerly KGB–intelligence agents. However, Dmitry Peskov, a spokesman for Putin, claims “There can be no discussion of any official involvement of any Russian agency, including the FSB… in any unlawful cyber activities.”

Continue praying that any espionage targeting the U.S. or any Americans will be exposed–whether it is by Russia or any other government, including our own.

Ecc. 12:14 – For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.
