American Healthcare Act: Epic Failure

The President and Speaker Ryan were not able to bring the new fix for Obamacare across the finish line. The Freedom Caucus in the House of Representatives and others were adamantly opposed to the bill because it didn’t go far enough to fix the existing bill. Speaker Paul Ryan pulled the bill on Friday before it came to a vote, knowing he didn’t have the numbers to get it passed.

The Democrats were unified against the bill, even though Obamacare is about to crumble under its own weight. In several states, all but one healthcare provider has pulled out because it is impossible for them to provide coverage. The “Affordable Care Act,” aka Obamacare, was President’s Obama’s signature domestic policy achievement. It remains in place even after seven years of attempts by the GOP to take it down.

Why this Matters: Christians and other conservatives did not like this bill. Just like Obamacare, it was a case of “we have to pass it in order to know what’s in it,” which does not sit well. After it looked like the measure would fail, President Trump expressed regret that he hadn’t pushed tax reform first, adding “maybe in August” they would be able to address taxes.

Pray for a new measure, one that will solidly tackle the healthcare system. Pray for wisdom and discernment and for our Father to guide this new President on a strait path.

Ps. 119:35 – Make me to go in the path of thy commandments; for therein do I delight.

suspectBomb Threat Suspect Arrested

A 19-year-old Jewish teen with dual Israeli/American citizenship has been arrested for making bomb threats to Jewish institutions in the U.S. The suspect lives in Israel, but for a month made threats to more than 100 Jewish community enters, schools and museums in the U.S., Australia and New Zealand. He also threatened at least one commercial airline flight, which caused the pilot to make an emergency landing.

The threatening calls were sent through the internet, using sophisticated software that disguises the caller’s location and voice. He may have used Tor, widely available anonymity software that routes internet traffic through various points around the globe. Tor is a favorite among criminals and activists hiding from the government.

The teen’s lawyer says he has a brain tumor which affects his cognitive abilities and can lead to irrational behavior.

Why this Matters: Critics of President Trump blamed him for not reacting soon enough to this recent rash of anti-semitic actions, some suggesting that this lack of action emboldened extremists.

It is not known why the teen made the threats, except that authorities noted when his activities in any particular city got noticed by the media, he would double-down in that locale.

Praise God the man has been caught! Pray he gets the medical help he needs and that his condition will be healed.

Will California Exit the Union?

There are rumblings by citizens of California that they want to leave the United States. There are several “Calexit” campaigns hoping for a voter referendum in the next couple of years. The independence faction, YesCalifornia, wants to succeed entirely. Another faction wants to split the state in two.

Nigel Farage, a former member of Britain’s parliament, and Aaron Banks, a financial backer, have just returned from California. They raised $1 million to help the movement. Their goal is to pit the conservative, rural eastern side against the liberal western coast. The conservative new state would give the Republican party two more senators, and that would help swing elections toward the right.

Why this Matters: There is no legal path for a state to succeed from the Union (remember the Civil War?). California has the sixth largest economy in the world. If secession backers are successful, there will be a measure on the 2019 ballot to clear the way. One in three Californians say they want the state to leave. The two-state measure may be on the ballot in 2018.

Pray for wisdom to prevail and for all Americans to put the good of the country before their own agenda.

Phil. 2:3 – Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but in lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself.
