Comey Admits to Leaking, Says President was Never Under Investigation

Former FBI Director James Comey testified before the Senate

on Thursday in connection with supposed wrongdoing by the President.
What Comey said:
  • President Trump tried to force him to drop the investigation into former national security advisor Michael Flynn. He interpreted Trump’s request, “I hope you can let this thing go,” as an order. Comey admitted Flynn was not central to the Russian investigation. Flynn was charged with having secret conversations with Russian officials after the election but before the inauguration–which is not a crime. However, he was spied on by the Obama Administration and his name was “unmasked” which may be a crime.
  • He believes President Trump fired him to interfere with his investigation of the Trump campaign’s ties to Russia.
  • Admitted that the President was not under investigation.
  • Alleged that Trump insisted Comey pledge his “honest loyalty” to the President. Trump opponents insist this is a crime and obstruction of justice.
  • Admitted that the President had encouraged the Russia investigation, even if it implicated one of his associates.
  • Feared the President would lie about their private conversation, and said, “Lordy, I hope there are tapes,” referring to Trump’s tweet that suggested he made a recording.
  • Accused the White House of spreading “lies, plain and simple” about the FBI and Comey’s leadership.
  • Arranged to have his private notes of a meeting with the President leaked to the press hoping this would force the appointment of a Special Counsel. If this were brought out in a court case, would it be considered criminal leaking of classified information?
  • Accused the press of publishing many, many stories in about Russia that were completely inaccurate. Comey also said that the Russians tried very hard to undermine the election.
Related to the Obama Administration:
  • Admitted he was pressured by former attorney general Loretta Lynch to use incorrect language in order to downplay the Clinton email server investigation. Instead of referring to it as an investigation, he was instructed by Lynch to refer to it as a “matter.” He said this was confusing because the only business the FBI conducts is criminal investigations. Comey also admitted that Lynch had a conflict of interest in the Clinton email investigation.
Why this Matters: The media and the Democrats were hoping for evidence of Trump committing “obstruction of justice.” However, American Presidents are allowed to hire/fire FBI directors at will, and they can pardon whomever they wish–such as Michael Flynn. President Trump did not pardon Flynn, but he has the constitutional authority to do so.
Even though there was no proof of obstruction of justice, and Comey admitted that Trump is not being investigated for collusion with the Russians, it will be interesting to see if the Left will let either of these charges go.
How to Pray: That the special investigation by Robert Mueller will be conducted properly, reported on correctly, and proceed quickly. Pray for the President’s health, safety, wisdom, and perseverance.
