Qatar Accused of Sponsoring Terror

An alliance of Arab states, led by Saudi Arabia, announced on Saturday they had severed ties and closed borders with Qatar–one of the wealthiest, but smallest, nations in the area. Qatar has ties to Iran and for funding terrorism, and is being sanctioned by its neighbors.

The nations cutting ties with Qatar are Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates. They have suspended air and sea travel to and from Qatar and Saudi Arabia has also shut its border. Qatar is a peninsula, and SA is its only land border.

After President Trump and Saudi King Salman recently singled out Iran as the world’s main sponsor of terrorism, Qatar’s newspaper ran a piece by the ruler of Qatar in which he criticized them. Officials quickly deleted the comments, and blamed them on hackers, but it was too late. Saudi and U.A.E. media outlets then launched verbal assaults against Qatar.

Why this Matters: Qatar is tiny but wealthy. It has one of the world’s largest sovereign wealth funds with over $335 billion investments in various international companies. It is also one of the biggest producers of liquefied natural gas and wants to pass a pipeline through Syria into Europe. The U.S. military has its forward headquarters for the Middle East in Qatar.

Pray for wisdom and discernment for our military, the President, and his cabinet.

Prov. 10:21 – The lips of the righteous feed many:
but fools die for want of wisdom.
