House IT Aide Takes $283,000, Caught Trying to Flee to Pakistan

The top tech aide for Democratic Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL) was arrested on Tuesday for bank fraud as he was trying to flee the country. He had just wired $283,000 to his home country of Pakistan where his wife and three children have been living since March.

The aide, Imran Awan, and several family members, worked as tech assistants for dozens of House Democrats. The FBI also seized smashed hard drives from Awan’s home.

Awan’s younger brothers, his wife and best friend are also under investigation. It has been reported that the brothers were paid more than $4 million over the last eight years by as many as 25 House members. Awan himself was paid $165,000 as a “part-time” employee, and his 22-year-old brother was paid nearly $160,000 annually. This is three times the average House IT staff salary.

The Awans had access for years to the emails and electronic files of members of the House Intelligence and Foreign Affairs Committees. They were also accessing members’ computers without their knowledge and transferring files to remote servers. Some hard drives were stolen and smashed by Awan before being turned over to officials by the renters who had leased Awan’s home.

The list of wrongdoing by Imran Awan, his family, and associates fills several pages in an investigation that has been ongoing since February. Even so, Debbie Wasserman Schultz kept Awan on the payroll until Tuesday’s arrest.

When the investigation began, Wasserman Schultz demanded that the Washington area police return her computers. When the police chief said that wouldn’t be possible, she responded, “you should expect that there will be consequences.” Some consider this as a threat, since she is in charge of the budget of the police force that is investigating the Awans.

Wasserman Schultz resigned as Chairman of the Democratic National Committee in 2016 after the DNC computers were hacked under her watch. Her brother Steven Wasserman is the Assistant Attorney for the District of Columbia and will oversee the investigation of Awan. (No, this is not a misprint or a joke.)

So far, this important story has mostly been given a pass by the mainstream media. Awan has denied wrongdoing, his lawyer citing “anti-Muslim bigotry” as the reason for his arrest.

Why this Matters: It seems that the stench of this scandal is finally reaching lawmakers. It has been reported that House and Senate Committees are calling for a full investigation into the Anwan family.

How to Pray: For a full, just and fair investigation; that the guilty will not go unpunished and that the mainstream media will be forced to report it.

Amos 5:15 – Hate the evil, and love the good, and establish judgment in the gate: it may be that the LORD God of hosts will be gracious unto the remnant of Joseph.
