Trump Signs Funding Bill; Declares National Emergency

On Friday, the President did two things to secure the nation. He declared a national emergency in order to fortify the southern border and also signed a spending bill to keep the government open. The spending bill’s provisions for immigration control and the border were in some ways detrimental to our national security, but without a spending bill, segments of the federal workforce would be working yet having their pay delayed, such as air traffic controllers and border patrol agents. Unacceptable.

President Trump announced his decisions from the Rose Garden Friday morning, saying it was a great thing to be registering a National Emergency, because we have an “invasion of drugs, invasion of gangs, invasion of people, and it’s unacceptable.” He recognized several women in the crowd who have lost their child or husband to murder by illegals.

He called for the death penalty for drug dealers, citing a similar law in China that removes the problem of deaths from overdose. He next talked about the good economy and about stopping the massive number of people who want to come here illegally, saying, “If we had the wall, it would be very easy.” Trump added that the cost of the wall would be made up by stopping the influx of illegals who have to be clothed, housed, fed, and treated medically.

  • Trump then celebrated the amount of money in the bill for ports of entry. “I don’t know what to do with all the money they’re giving us. It’s crazy.”
  • The bill allocates $1.375 billion for the wall and border security. But, by using the National Emergency the President says, “we have a chance of getting close to $8 billion–whether it’s $8 billion or $2 billion or $2.5 billion, it’s going to build a lot of wall. We’re getting it done.”
  • Trump also laid out the coming fight from Democrats, saying his administration would be sued and get bad rulings from lower courts, but hopefully when it ends up in the Supreme Court, they would rule favorably. This is what happened on the travel ban imposed on people from Muslim-majority nations.

There have been 31 declarations of a national emergency dating back to the Carter administration. This one allows the President to take funds from other parts of the government—such as from the largest-ever $700 billion given to the military—without getting congressional approval.

Why this Matters: The bill itself is nearly 1,200 pages long and funds the government only through September. It will take time for all of the details to come out–another case where the lawmakers didn’t have enough time to read the bill and know what’s in it before voting.

Many conservatives are concerned. According to a former ICE director, “More kids will be smuggled, more kids will be molested, more kids will die” as a result of the expanded protections for illegal immigrants.

As of this writing, the Democrat-controlled House Judiciary Committee announced it will “investigate” the national emergency declaration, and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY, the 28-year-old proponent of the “Green New Deal”) announced on Twitter that she and Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-TX) “aren’t going to let the President declare a fake national emergency without a fight.” They plan to introduce a bill to stop him.

Building the Wall or Finishing it?

On Monday, the liberal Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals sided with the President regarding building and fortifying sections of the wall, ignoring the protests of several environmental groups.

Six miles of concrete and steel barrier are being built in the Rio Grande Valley border sector. The structures will be supplemented with detection technology, lighting, video surveillance, and an all-weather patrol road running parallel to the border.

At his campaign rally in El Paso on Monday, the President said “We’ve actually started a big, big portion of the wall today at a very important location, and it’s going to go up pretty quickly over the next nine months.”

How to Pray: For the safety of the President, his cabinet, lawmakers and their families. For Christians who have become overwhelmed by the news–especially because they listen to Fake News Media–that they will begin to have hope again. Pray for them to have ears to hear the truth. Pray that the best-ever wall will be built to protect the American people and stop crime and drugs at the border.

Prov. 29:18 – Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.

Luke 19:13 – And he called his ten servants, and delivered them ten pounds, and said unto them, Occupy till I come.
