On January 16, the President updated a 2003 guideline reinforcing the right of students to pray in public schools. The renewed guidance makes it clear that students can read religious texts or pray during recess, organize prayer groups, and express their religious beliefs in their assignments. To receive federal funds, local educational agencies must confirm that their policies do not prevent or interfere with students’ constitutional rights.
President Trump also updated protections for religious groups requesting federal funding, and eliminated burdensome requirements imposed by the Obama administration. States doling out federal grants will be required to comply with the First Amendment guarantee of freedom of religion.
Why this Matters: President Trump is a great champion of religious freedom and Christian values. Here are a few of his other actions.
- Signed Executive Orders upholding religious liberty and the right to engage in religious speech, and another recognizing the essential contributions of faith-based organizations and establishing the Faith and Opportunity Initiative.
- Reversed the Obama-era policy that prevented the government from providing disaster relief to religious organizations.
- Hosted a Global Call to Protect Religious Freedom event at the United Nations and called on the international community and business leaders to work to protect religious freedom around the world.
- Partnered with local and faith-based organizations to provide assistance to vulnerable religious minorities.
How to Pray: Thank God for giving us a respite from evil. He has answered our prayers. Continue to pray for the president and his team–that they will hear from God and humble themselves in obedience.
Phil. 4:6,7 – Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
