HGTV Embraces Throuple: Husband, Wife and their Lover

Many of us first learned about polygamy in the Bible. The early fathers of the faith had multiple wives. Solomon had wives and concubines–a thousand in all. The dictionary definition is polygyny–the marriage of one man to multiple wives.

In 2010, viewers’ interest was piqued when TLC produced the reality show “Sister Wives” about polygamy (multiple spouses). That was followed by “Escaping Polygamy,” suggesting these multi-person sexual relationships are wicked and harmful. Recent data analysis indicates that polygyny produces higher levels of sex trafficking and higher levels of domestic violence than traditional marriage.

Nevertheless, on Wednesday, the Utah State Senate voted to decriminalize polygamy between consenting adults, making bigamy and polygamy an infraction rather than a felony. Fines and community service would be the extent of legal enforcement.

On Wednesday, perversity went mainstream as HGTV introduced us to a house-hunting “throuple:” a Colorado man and his wife and their lover. The three adults and their two children are looking for the perfect house—you know, one with three sinks in the master bath—and America’s favorite real estate show was on the scene to help.

Brain, Lori, and Angelica are polyamorous (many loves, in Latin). You see, Brian married bisexual Lori 12 years ago and they had two children, but he always knew she would be looking for a female partner. As Brian explains, “I understood from day one, even when we were dating, that Lori was bisexual, and interested in women and men. And so, we evolved to a point where we were comfortable having another woman in our lives.” 

That woman was Angelica, who the couple met at a bar. A year later, the three went to Aruba to “get married” in an unofficial ceremony. Today, the children, 12 and 10, are growing up with their mother, father, and their parents’ lover.

Meet the First “Throuple” to Reach National Attention

In October, photos emerged of Democrat Rep. Katie Hill (D-CA) sitting naked in a hotel room and brushing the hair of a female congressional employee. Katie and her husband were in a long-term relationship with the female staffer until Katie broke it off because it was a “political risk.” She later resigned in disgrace–not because of the polyamorous relationship, but because she also had a solo affair with her male legislative director.

According to the New York Post, “Polyamory has lately been enjoying some mainstream acceptance. It’s estimated that up to 5% of Americans enjoy a relationship that involves more than two people, and 20% have at least attempted some form of ethical non-monogamy.”

We have been subjected to media celebration of homosexual couples for some time now. Pete Buttigieg is one of the leaders in the Democrat pack running for president and is openly gay. He ends his rallies in passionate kisses with his “husband” Chasten, whose name oddly means “rebuke or misfortune; punishment.”

What perversion will be mainstreamed next? We need look no further than the educational materials being offered in grade schools. Parents in Grand Haven, Michigan are fighting to rid the schools of library books with sexually explicit content that target 5th and 6th graders and promote pedophilia.

• One describes an exchange leading up to oral/anal sex between a 14-year-old boy and his 17-year-old boyfriend. 

• A second book describes a young man’s passion for giving oral sex to people in his neighborhood when he was six years old. 

• Perhaps the worst is a book describing the kidnapping and sexual assault of a 16-year-old girl. Some parents champion the “redeeming” value of the girl’s escape, yet readers must endure a long description of graphic sex and violence that precedes it.

Between HGTV’s decision to promote perversion and the Grand Haven School Board sexual indoctrination of children, it’s hard to tell which is more dangerous. There’s an evil agenda at work with many people and lots of money involved and sadly, most Americans don’t seem to care. Katie Hill received widespread love and support, as magazines such as Men’s Health and Women’s Health have been extolling the benefits of polyamory for some time. 

HGTV, which used to provide safe family viewing, received enthusiastic approval for the episode, which was hailed as “educational” and “diversity for all families.” One person summed it up as “perfect television.”

Don’t look for the modern church to stand for biblical morality, either. 
Jared Cramer, priest at St. John’s Episcopal Church Grand Haven, defended the graphic sex acts in young adult literature, saying it helps adolescents form a healthy and positive sense of their sexual identity.
It’s been 4.5 years since the Supreme Court legalized same sex marriage, and to conservative Christians, this next drop in standards is unwelcome but perhaps not unexpected. 

In the past 15 years, at least four denominations have split because of the gay agenda: Episcopal, Evangelical Lutheran, Presbyterian Church USA, and American Baptist. The United Methodist Church recently announced it is also working on a legal split, and religious scholars predict conservative and evangelical denominations are not far behind.

What does God say?

Some claim that love is love. They contend Jesus never prohibited same-sex relationships. Yet, in teaching about divorce, Jesus stated that marriage is between a man and a woman. He is the Word and taught with authority from the Old Testament, where homosexuality, lesbianism and bestiality are forbidden. 

In the book of Romans, Paul describes the judgment of God on people who commit these things and take delight in others doing them also. They are worthy of death because they know it’s wrong. 

For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature: And likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust one toward another; men with men working that which is unseemly, and receiving in themselves that recompense of their error which was meet. And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient; (Romans 1:26-28)

According to researcher George Barna, 90 percent of pastors recognize that the Bible speaks to these issues, but fewer than 10 percent teach what the Bible says. Modern evangelical churches say they cannot preach about such things or they would offend the seekers.

There are some people who sin and know it–and there are others who sin and don’t know. If we don’t tell them, who will? Believers are salt and light and not supposed to remaining silent:

When I say unto the wicked, You shalt surely die; and you give him not warning, nor speak to warn the wicked from his wicked way, to save his life; the same wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at your hand. (Ez. 3:18)

Why this Matters: This is a difficult teaching, especially since we are living in a time when hate speech is defined as voicing disapproval of sin. But there is a way to walk by the leading of the Holy Spirit, waiting for God to put people in our paths for whom we can pray and with whom we can share the truth. Let’s remember that we have all sinned, and fallen short of the glory of God. It is Christ who justifies and His blood cleanses us from all sin. (Rom. 3:23)

How to Pray: Father, give us opportunities to share the hope we have in Christ as the Holy Spirit leads. We ask that You would open hearts and minds to the truth. Help us to share in gentleness and love so that they will be able to bear it.
